Registry Hacks

Warning

It is normal practice to backup your registry before performing such hacks.

Word 97

Not an exhaustive list of hacks, just hacks we find useful ourselves.

No Editing Time
While working on Word documents, Word tracks the total editing time and embeds this in the document properties (for anyone to inspect!). This registry hack tells Word not to update this property.

Documents created after running this hack will show 'Total Editing Time: 0 minutes'. Previously created documents are re-saved showing no additional editing time.

Key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Options]
"NoEditTime"="1"

Live Scrolling
Word doesn't scroll documents until you release the scrollbar.

This registry hack turns on smooth scrolling so that your document scrolls while you move the scroll bar.

Key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Options]
"LiveScrolling"="1"

To Install

1 - Download the registry file to your hard drive (by right-clicking the icons and choosing 'Save Target As').
2 - Rename the file so that it ends in .reg instead of .txt
3 - Close Word (and other Office applications if they are running).
4 - Double click the re-named file.
5 - This will add the information into the Windows Registry (for the current user only).
6 - Restart Word.
